In Sarafand, on the southern coast, the Khalifeh brothers keep Phoenician glassblowing alive — with a twist their ancestors would approve of: the furnace runs almost entirely on crushed recycled glass, gathered from Beirut's restaurants and bottling lines.
The signature green of their carafes is not a dye; it is the colour recycled glass wants to be. Two brothers gather, one blows, and every piece is finished, annealed and packed within metres of the sea that carried this craft here three thousand years ago.
